The Pre-licensing class can be taken either in a classroom setting or via distance learning/virtual class. If you choose the classroom version, then you will receive an MV-278 Prelicensing Certificate of Completion. No matter which version you decide to take all courses follow the same curriculum content. Once you successfully complete your course, the instructor will report your achievement to the DMV automatically, and you don't require the certificate at the time of taking your driver's exam.
